Philipp Kohlschreiber has dominated this matchup in the past (5-1) but both players would fancy their chances in this particular meeting and will see this as an excellent opportunity to register a rare main draw win at this level.

In an attempt to bag few wins and regain the confidence, Philipp Kohlschreiber entered the Challenger circuits recently and it worked to an extent as he made the semifinal in Genoa Challenger and quarterfinal in Florence Challenger. The veteran German is still searching for his first main draw win on the main tour since defeating the Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the first round of ATP Kitzbuhel in July. Moreover, he has competed in two indoor hardcourt tournaments so far in 2019 and failed to win a match in both events — lost to Radu Albot and Milos Raonic in the first round of ATP Montpellier and Rotterdam, respectively. Regardless of the recent poor form, Philipp Kohlschreiber would be fairly confident at the moment as he has got a terrific record in Moscow, having reached at least the quarterfinal in five of his previous seven appearances in this tournament.

Pierre Hugues Herbert’s current form isn’t great either as he is going through a rough patch at the moment. The Frenchman recently snapped his seven-match losing streak by defeating the German Jan Lennard Struff in the first round of ATP Metz (IH) but couldn’t build on it as he failed in straight sets against compatriot Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the following match. The big-serving Pierre Hugues Herbert must be disappointed with this run as he posted some consistent results on the main tour in the first half of the season and even cleared the first-round hurdle in nine consecutive tournaments between Marrakech and Eastbourne but has been struggling to win matches in recent months.
