Until two months ago, Victoria Azarenka held no match wins to her name since August 2019 due to a combination of personal reason-led break from the tour, and the pandemic. The former world no. 1 has since won 15 matches in four tournaments to enter the top 20 rankings for the first time since her 2017 maternity comeback. The biggest head-turner of Azarenka’s resurgence is her three weeks at Flushing Meadows, winning her first title as a mother (W&S Open) and reaching her first Grand Slam final in seven years (l. Osaka). She has landed in Ostrava to compete in her first Czech tournament in 12 years and has received a first-round bye.

Barbora Krejcikova is one of the three Czech players left in the draw after two days of action, along with Karolina Muchova and Karolina Pliskova. She defeated compatriot and fellow qualifier Tereza Martincova, 7-5, 6-1, on Monday with 24 winners and 15 unforced errors, compared to her opponent’s 11 and 21, respectively. Krejcikova was having a usual season until Roland-Garros rolled around. She defeated Strycova and Pironkova en route her maiden visit to the second week of a Grand Slam as a singles player before falling to Podoroska in the fourth round. Consequently, the 24-year-old has debuted into the top 100 and risen as high as 85.
