Ekaterina Alexandrova makes it three semifinals in a row at Upper Austria Ladies Linz after delivering a humbling 6-2, 6-1 beating to sixth seed Nadia Podoroska. She gave the Argentinian player — who became a Roland-Garros semifinalist and top 100 debutante last month — no quarter, wrapping up the quarterfinal in 58 minutes. This is the tournament where Alexandrova reached her maiden WTA semifinal and final two years ago, then playing as a 119th-ranked qualifier. She lost the 2018 championship match to Camila Giorgi in convincing straight sets, and her bid for a second Linz final was denied by Jelena Ostapenko, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, 12 months ago. Alexandrova is yet to drop a set this week, starting the affair with efficient wins against Siniakova and Gracheva. She holds a 2-4 record in her tour semifinals. Apart from 2018 Linz, her only WTA title round appearance came at the very start of this season, when she went on to beat Rybakina and Muguruza to lift her maiden title.

Elise Mertens just enjoyed her first straight-set win of the week. She needed more than two hours to beat 2008 finalist and 36-year-old wildcard Vera Zvonareva, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, and qualifier Anhelina Kalinina, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, but eased past fellow seeded player Veronika Kudermetova, 6-4, 6-1, with 81% first-serve win percentage. Mertens was already the tour’s match win leader of the season when she landed in Linz. She holds 33 wins in this abbreviated year, 22 coming since the break itself. Furthermore, both of her previous semifinal appearances have also come after the resumption, at Prague (l. Halep in final) and W&S Open (l. Osaka in the SF). Careerwise, Mertens holds a 7-7 record when aiming for a final on tour. The Belgian, who last won a title at Doha in February 2019, has never reached a championship match in an indoor environment. Her only previous attempt at Luxembourg three years ago when she submitted to an unseeded Monica Puig in straight sets.
