Marta Kostyuk is coming off a couple of bittersweet USTA Pro Circuit events. She reached her career’s biggest finals at W80s Macon and Tyler in back-to-back weeks but came up short in both instances, losing to Cici Bellis via retirement (cramp) and Ann Li in three-setters, but debuted into the top 100 as a consolation prize. Former junior world no. 1 Kostyuk made this season a special one early on, winning her biggest ITF title at W60 Cairo in singles and doubles. Since the end of the pandemic halt, the 18-year-old has pulled off a win-loss of 16-6, most notably reaching the third round of the US Open and almost upsetting eventual champion Osaka.

Former world no. 2 Vera Zvonareva has been given a wildcard to facilitate her return to Upper Austria Ladies Linz. She has played this tournament five times in the past, including debuting as a 19-year-old way back in 2003 and finishing as its runner-up to Ana Ivanovic when she last contested this indoor event in 2008. Zvonareva has already started her Linz comeback in doubles, beating the Austrian duo of Grabher/Antonitsch. Though she is currently ranked no. 173, the 36-year-old has not been running short of success in recent months, given she won her career’s third Grand Slam doubles title with Laura Siegemund at Flushing Meadows.
