Vasek Pospisil vs. Jan Lennard Struff – Prediction – ATP Sofia (Bulgaria) 10.11.2020

H2H: Vasek Pospisil v Jan Lennard Struff – comparison.

Vasek Pospisil won the pair’s first meeting in Hertogenbosch (G) back in 2014, and Jan Lennard Struff managed to level the H2H series with a hard-fought three-set comeback win in Munich (C) two years later (2016). On current form, there isn’t much between these two, and anyone could win this evenly-poised battle for a place in the quarterfinal.

Vasek Pospisil is fortunate to be in the second round of ATP Sofia as his first-round opponent (and lucky loser) Illya Marchenko had plenty of matches to snatch the win but failed to take them. Playing his first main draw match on the main tour in over two years, the Ukrainian served for the match in the deciding set, then gained three consecutive breakpoint chances and later led 4-0 in the deciding set tiebreaker only for the Canadian to fight back and steal the win, 6-2 5-7 7-6. It was yet another unconvincing performance from Vasek Pospisil, who hasn’t been performing at his best level in recent weeks.

Former world #25 Vasek Pospisil was taken to the distance by Alexander Erler and Jason Jung in the qualifying stages of ATP Vienna and edged out by Marton Fucsovics in three sets in the final qualifying round of Paris Masters last week. Vasek Pospisil, who had been playing some solid and consistent tennis since returning from the injury break in the second half of the 2019 season, has won 18 matches so far in 2020, and 12 of them have come on indoor hard courts with the best result being a runner-up finish in Montpellier.

Jan Lennard Struff’s form in recent weeks hasn’t been great either as he has won only three of his last ten matches on the main tour, with two of those wins coming against Marco Cecchinato on indoor hard court and the struggling Nikoloz Basilashvili. The big-serving German now makes his second consecutive appearance in Sofia, where he was unseeded in the main draw during his debut campaign in 2019 (R16) but is seeded #4 and given a bye in the first round of this edition. The last and only time the 30-year-old Jan Lennard Struff got a bye in the first round on the main tour was in Washington last year, where he lost to Jordan Thompson in the second round, despite winning the first set 7-6.
