Though both of these players have gone through a lot of problems over the last 20 months or so, Stan Wawrinka holds a dominant 12-2 lead in the H2H series, and he deservedly starts as the favorite.

Marin Cilic avoided his third consecutive first-round exit from Masters 1000 events (R1 exit in Cincinnati and Shanghai) after overcoming a tough test against Hubert Hurkacz in Paris earlier this week, 7-6 6-4. The former US Open champion, Marin Cilic was ranked as high as #3 less than 12 months ago, but he is now fighting to secure a seeded spot in the main draw of Australian Open 2020. Cilic is currently sitting at #24 in the ATP World Ranking and has got the quarterfinal points to defend in Paris this week.

“It’s been a tough season. I have to accept it,” said Marin Cilic after winning his first-round match against Hubert Hurkacz. He has won only 25 matches so far in 2019 and made his first semifinal appearance of the season only in Moscow a few weeks ago.

Marin Cilic suffered three consecutive second-round exit from Paris Masters between 2012-2015 but has reached at least the quarterfinal during his recent three visits in 2016, 2017, and 2018. After pulling out of the quarterfinal clash against compatriot Roger Federer in Basel last week, Stan Wawrinka returns to action in Paris and will begin his campaign on Wednesday (R1 bye).

Former world #3 Stan Wawrinka could not compete in Paris Masters since 2016 as he was forced to shut down his 2017 and 2018 season early due to injuries. He’s been to the semifinal of this tournament once, but the most recent campaign in 2016 ended in the second round against Jan Lennard Struff.

Since coming back from the lengthy injury break in 2018, the Swiss has played only two championship matches on the main tour, and both of those runs came on indoor hardcourt — runner-up in Rotterdam and Antwerp earlier this month.
