Rapid Vienna vs Dundalk – Prediction (Europa League – 5.11.2020)

H2H: Rapid v Dundalk – Comparison.

Rapid’s Ercan Kara is searching for his first continental goal in four starts, after goals in his last four domestic appearances when starting. Dundalk’s Sean Murray has recorded their opening goal in the first half on three occasions in this UEL competition. Just three of Rapid’s last 19 matches in all competitions have produced 0-0 HT results, with 15 of the remaining 16 seeing one team complete a HT/FT double.

Rapid Insights.

Despite a run of five straight domestic wins, Rapid Vienna have lost both of their UEFA Europa League (UEL) fixtures this campaign and have subsequently now lost each of their last five continental fixtures as an outsider, four of them by a one-goal margin. They will, however, welcome an opportunity to stretch out a four game winning streak as a match favourite in UEFA football. The Austrian outfit have now failed to win a second half of football in six continental fixtures dating back to 2018/19, leading to the team that opened the scoring winning all but once in that period (and ‘to-nil’ in four of six games). Interestingly, Rapid have not been involved in a continental draw since November 2018 (W3, L5), a pattern that appears set to continue after they drew just one of their last 22 competitive matches (W14, L7).

Dundalk Insights.

Dundalk’s overall record in UEL group stages deteriorated further to W1, D1, L6 after losing to Arsenal. A recent domestic league draw joined their home UEL defeat to Molde as the second of four competitive matches in which they failed to win in spite of boasting the opening goal (D1, L1). Perhaps most concerningly for the Irish club, all but one of their last five away defeats in UEFA competitions have been by a margin of at least three goals, and with their only trip to Austria netting them a three-goal defeat in a 2018/19 friendly, as well as the first goal conceded in six of their last eight UEFA away trips, an upset result appears well out of place.
