Radu Albot upset the top seed and world #12 Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to move into the quarterfinal of ATP Sofia for the first time in three appearances. He won 86% of his first-serve points and created six breakpoint chances on the Canadian’s serve during this impressive win, 6-2 6-4. It was the Moldovan’s second straightforward win of the campaign as he previously raced to a dominant straight-set win over Yuichi Sugita in the first round on Sunday (6-4 6-1), winning over 80% of his first-serve points, creating nine breakpoint chances and without facing a breakpoint on his serve.

With this win, former world #39 Radu Albot ended his six-match losing streak against top-20 players and registered his biggest win since defeating then-world #18 Marin Cilic in the first round of Cincinnati Masters 2019, where he lost to Diego Schwartzman in the following round. Radu Albot will next face a left-handed opponent for the second time in two days. He’s got a perfect 2-0 record against lefties so far in 2020, having defeated Alessandro Gianessi in Paris Masters last week and Denis Shapovalov in Sofia this Wednesday. Radu Albot made his first quarterfinal appearance of the season only in the first leg of ATP Cologne last month, where he got bageled by Felix Auger Aliassime, 3-6 0-6. This defeat also ended his five-match winning streak in the quarterfinal of ATP Tour events.

After recovering from a set deficit against the dangerous Martin Klizan in the first round of ATP Sofia earlier this week, Adrian Mannarino cleared a tricky test against Egor Gerasimov in straight sets to reach the quarterfinal, 6-4 7-6. This will be the Frenchman’s third quarterfinal appearance on the main tour in his last four outings, which is an excellent outcome for him especially considering he had been struggling to win matches for the majority of the season and even went through a five-match losing streak between the US Open and St.Petersburg recently. Adrian Mannarino lost his first quarterfinal match of the season to the eventual champion Alexander Zverev in the second leg of ATP Cologne but defeated Mackenzie McDonald quite comfortably at this stage en route to the final in Nur Sultan.
