Novak Djokovic vs. Denis Shapovalov – Prediction (ATP Paris – 03.11.2019)

Preview and players comparison.

Denis Shapovalov defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets when they met in Boodles Tennis Challenge earlier this season, but on the main tour, he could win only one set in three matches against the Serbian. Djokovic has got a terrific record in the championship matches, and he should be able to get the job done against the talented Canadian in Paris this Sunday.

Top seed Novak Djokovic registered his fourth straight-set win of the week by defeating Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinal on Saturday, 7-6 6-4. His best performance of the campaign came against world #7 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal as he dropped only three games against the in-form Greek (6-1 6-2). Novak Djokovic, who becomes the first player to complete the career Golden Masters in Cincinnati 2018, bids to win his 34th Masters 1000 title in Paris this week, which would put him within one of Rafael Nadal’s 35 trophies at this level.

World #1 Novak Djokovic has got a 33-16 record in the championship matches of Masters 1000 events so far in his career with the recent such match ending in a three-set defeat against Rafael Nadal in Rome Masters this May (0-6 6-4 1-6). The four-time former champion of Paris Masters, Novak Djokovic lost his perfect record in the finals of Paris Masters (4-1) when he suffered a disappointing straight-set defeat against Karen Khachanov in the title-deciding clash of last year’s edition (5-7 4-6). Though there is a Masters 1000 title at stake, the Serbian’s main objective this week is probably to stop Rafael Nadal from winning the title. Now that the Spaniard is out of the competition, winning the Sunday’s final would give Djokovic the edge in the race for year-end #1, which will be decided in the ATP World Tour Finals in a few weeks time.

“It is very satisfying honestly because I haven’t really been feeling my best throughout the week. But I’ve been playing really well the past couple of matches. [I am] looking forward to the final tomorrow,” said Novak Djokovic after booking his spot in the final of Paris Masters.

World #28 Denis Shapovalov’s only previous championship match at this level came in Stockholm (IH) a couple of weeks ago where he defeated the Serbian Filip Krajinovic in straight sets to lift the maiden ATP Tour title of his career. Rafael Nadal, who needed the Paris Masters title to secure the year-end #1 ranking, pulled out of the semifinal clash due to injury, handing Denis Shapovalov a place in the final. The Canadian has done quite well so far in this campaign, having got the better of three top 20 players in Fabio Fognini, Alexander Zverev, and Gael Monfils. Denis Shapovalov recently became the first Canadian since Milos Raonic in 2016 to win an ATP Tour title, and he’s now got an opportunity to become the first-ever Canadian player in the history to lift an ATP Masters 1000 title.
