Both players have registered a similar number of wins this season. Osaka is one away from her 40th, while the 29-year-old is just two behind the youngster. Each of them has lifted multiple titles, though Kvitova’s latest came to a while back in April at Stuttgart, where she had to win just four matches to get the trophy. This clash is a rematch of this year’s Australian Open final, which is the pair’s only previous meeting. Kvitova, in her first Grand Slam final appearance since 2014, forced the deciding set from the brink of defeat but ultimately fell 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 27 minutes. This match is expected to be equally enticing.

Naomi Osaka mounted a late surge to qualify for Shenzhen. She has played two tournaments since the US Open, at Osaka and Beijing, winning both to claim her fourth and fifth career titles. The 22-year-old didn’t drop a set in her birth city while beating Barty, Wozniacki, and Andreescu at the Chinese capital. Osaka made her WTA Finals debut in 2018 while being the reigning US Open champion. The Japanese player couldn’t win a round-robin match in Singapore. She lost to Sloane Stephens and Angelique Kerber in three-setters, each lasting nearly two and a half hours, and retired to Kiki Bertens due to a leg injury.

Petra Kvitova is the oldest participant this week. She has qualified for the crown jewel event for the seventh time now, previously playing thrice in Istanbul and Singapore each. The former world no. 2 became the third-ever Czech to win this tournament, back in 2011 as a debutante at the former Turkish capital. Kvitova has gone past the group stages of the WTA Finals three times in the past, although it went 0-3 in round-robin in Singapore last year. She is coming off a semifinal finish in Wuhan and quarterfinal in Beijing. Those results ended her near five-month wait to clear a round-of-16 match; hadn’t done so since Madrid.
