Playing her first match since her historic run at Roland-Garros, Nadia Podoroska saw through Irina-Camelia Begu, 6-4, 6-4, losing just one service game per set to open her first hard-court outing since March. Earlier this week, she had partnered with none other than the Romanian to begin their doubles campaign with a victory. Until she became the first-ever qualifier to reach the semifinal of Roland-Garros (d. Svitolina, Putintseva), Podoroska held just three tour-level main draw wins (3-10) and none since 2018. She was ranked outside top 300 just a year ago and had never won a professional title above W25 level until W60 Saint-Malo in September.

Former champion Camila Giorgi was on her way to a straight-set win over Sara Sorribes Tormo as she led by a set and double break. Instead, she lost six out of the last seven games of the second set, and ultimately needed two hours and 38 minutes to survive the ordeal, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and kickstart her sixth Linz appearance. Giorgi owns a 2-2 record when bidding for a quarterfinal spot at the Upper Austrian capital. While she was denied in 2013 and 2015, the Italian has gone on to reach its final a couple of times, finishing runner-up to Ka. Pliskova in 2014 but eventually winning the title in 2018. She couldn’t defend the title last year due to wrist injury.
