Marin Cilic edges the H2H series 3-2 and will head into this clash as the slight favorite, despite being nowhere near his best at the moment.

​Third seed Marin Cilic knocked out compatriot Ivo Karlovic in straight sets to maintain his perfect record in the opening round of ATP Moscow (4-0). Cilic fired 11 aces, won around 90% of his first-serve points and held all his service games during this win, 6-1 7-6.​ In his previous three appearances in Moscow, twice Marin Cilic has cleared the second round hurdle, and he went on to lift the title on both occasions in 2014 and 2015 — defeated Tommy Robredo and Andrey Kuznetsov in the quarterfinal, respectively. The match against Ivo Karlovic on Thursday was the big-serving Croatian’s first outing on indoor hardcourt this season. The last time he reached the semifinal on an indoor hardcourt tournament was in Basel 2017 — defeated Marton Fucsovics in the quarterfinal. 2019 has been a season to forget for former world #3 Marin Cilic as he has won only 23 matches in these nine months and had made only two quarterfinal appearances on the main tour. As a result of this poor run, Marin Cilic dropped to #25 in the ATP World Rankings and lost the Croatian #1 tag to Borna Coric.

Jeremy Chardy avoided his fifth consecutive second-round defeat on the main tour with a routine straight-set win over Miomir Kecmanovic, 6-3 6-4. He is yet to drop a set this week as he comfortably dispatched Nicolas Jarry in the first round, 6-4 6-2. This is the first time the Frenchman has scored consecutive main draw wins in straight sets since ATP Montpellier in February 2019, where he defeated Adrian Menendez-Maceiras and Antoine Hoang quite comfortably, but failed against Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinal. Jeremy Chardy is currently on a four-match losing run in the quarterfinal of ATP Tour events, and he will have to work hard to avoid yet another defeat at this stage.
