Maria Sakkari vs. Victoria Azarenka – Prediction – WTA Ostrava (Czech Republic) 24.10.2020

H2H: Maria Sakkari v Victoria Azarenka – comparison.

Sakkari owns a 2-6 career record in tour-level semifinals, having previously finished as the runner-up to Mihaela Buzarnescu at 2018 San Jose but winning the title at Rabat in 2019 (d. Konta in final). Her only final-four match of the season came at St. Petersburg, an indoor event, and it ended with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 loss to Rybakina.

Victoria Azarenka came from behind to down Elise Mertens, 6-4, 6-1, brushing off an early break deficit in the opening set and repeating last month’s US Open quarterfinal victory. The Belgian took the charge of being the aggressor with 28 winners to Azarenka’s 21, but the fourth seeded committed 16 fewer errors (11 to 27). Azarenka is enjoying a rich vein of form, which has seen her win 17 matches in the last five tournaments, including claiming 13 victories in straight sets and grabbing 25 sets across them at the cost of three games or less. The former world no. 1 has, therefore, entered the top 20 ranking for the first time since becoming a mother.

Due to personal reasons and pandemic, Azarenka competed in just two tournaments between the 2019 US Open and 2020 W&S Open, losing the first round of both of them. She has since reached the finals of a couple of big tournaments, winning her 21st career title in the relocated Cincinnati and entering her fifth slam final.

Maria Sakkari is through to her second semifinal of the season after rallying against Ons Jabeur, prevailing 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. While both players dispatched an almost even number of winners, the Greek player made just 14 errors off her racquet, compared to the Tunisian’s 39, helping her take this three-set match in just 97 minutes. Sakkari will not be blown away by Azarenka’s recent string of performances. The 25-year-old, who debuted in top 20 this February, has been a consistent force throughout this season, including reaching the fourth round of Grand Slams for the first time in her career (Australian and US Opens) and collecting four top 20 scalps.
