Lloyd Harris produced an excellent performance to knock out the former Brit #1 Kyle Edmund in the first round of ATP Cologne on Tuesday. The South African youngster fired eight aces and never trailed the match at any stage, despite facing 11 breakpoints in two sets, 7-5 7-6. It was Lloyd Harris’ third win of the campaign and first in straight sets. He needed a couple of comeback efforts against Peter Gojowczyk and Marcos Giron in the qualifying stages over the weekend. The runner-up of ATP Adelaide 2020, Lloyd Harris competed in five indoor Challenger events last year, and he managed to reach at least the quarterfinal in three of them. Overall, he has won 23 matches on the surface at the expense of 16 losses so far in his career.

Steve Johnson was also handed a tough assignment in the first round of ATP Cologne as he was drawn against the in-form Filip Krajinovic. The American rode his luck and served well during crucial moments to end up on the winning side of a three-set contest, 3-6 6-4 6-4. It was only the former world #21 Steve Johnson’s second win from five outings since the restart. He made an encouraging start to 2020 by winning titles in Bendigo Challenger and Indian Wells Challenger and reaching the quarterfinal in Delray Beach but has been struggling to deliver his best tennis in recent months.
