Preview and players comparison.
The pair met each other in the first round of Palermo Ladies Open, WTA’s first tournament since the suspension. Pliskova prevailed 6-4, 6-4, leveling the head-to-head record at 1-1 and avenging her 2017 Wimbledon, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, defeat. On their third career meeting on a third different surface, Sakkari is slated to retake the lead.
Maria Sakkari exited Roland-Garros with a bitter taste after losing to qualifier Martina Trevisan, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3, in the third round. She had a couple of match points to book her maiden second-week appearance at the tournament and could not stop the Cinderella run of the 159th-ranked Italian, who went on to reach the quarterfinals. Sakkari, ranked 23rd, is the highest unseeded player in the J&T Banka Open. She has done a remarkable job throughout the season, including clearing seven out of 10 opening-round matches. Though a last-16 finisher in Melbourne and New York, her best result of 2020 came on St. Petersburg’s indoor hard courts (SF, d. Bencic).
Kristyna Pliskova has been given a wildcard to make her first Premier-level main draw appearance since last year’s grass season. One of the seven Czech players in this draw of 28, the world no. 68 is a couple of matches away from notching up her 50th career main draw win in WTA hard-court tournaments at the age of 28. It seems unlikely that Pliskova will be able to cross the milestone this week. She is on a five-match losing streak on the surface, going back to January when she started the year with a semifinal in Shenzhen. On the other hand, she has a definite home advantage on her side, which helped her reach the final four of Prague this August.
