Daniil Medvedev’s attempt to defend his title in St.Petersburg earlier this month ended prematurely as he was knocked out by the big-serving Reilly Opelka in three sets in the second round. It was the Russian #1 Daniil Medvedev’s fourth defeat in five matches. Since progressing to the semifinal of the US Open last month, world #4 has produced few disappointing performances against the likes of Ugo Humbert, Marton Fucsovics, and Richard Gasquet.

After winning back-to-back titles in St.Petersburg and Shanghai Masters, Daniil Medvedev rested for a couple of weeks and resumed his season in Paris Masters last year but has opted to make his debut in Vienna this time around. Daniil Medvedev has won an impressive 100 matches on indoor hard courts at the expense of only 50 losses so far in his young career and has won at least ten matches on the surface in each of the last five seasons. However, his performance on indoor hard courts this year hasn’t been good enough as he competed in three such tournaments and could win only two matches.

Jason Jung failed in three sets against Vasek Pospisil in the final qualifying round on Sunday but will enter the main draw as a lucky loser, thanks to last week’s ATP Antwerp runner-up Alex de Minaur’s late withdrawal. The 31-year-old Jason Jung’s only previous main draw appearance on indoor hard courts at this level in 2020 came in New York back in February, where he defeated the likes of Reilly Opelka and Kevin Anderson to reach the semifinal.
