H2H: Jannik Sinner v Vasek Pospisil – comparison.

Superior ability makes Jannik Sinner (Italy) the deserved favorite in the pair’s first-ever meeting, but Vasek Pospisil (Canada), playing to the best of his abilities, is very much capable of winning this matchup.

Jannik Sinner continued his recent good form on the main tour with a routine straight-set win over Adrian Mannarino, who has posted some solid results on indoor hard courts over the last few weeks. The Italian fired nine aces and held all his service games during this win, 6-3 7-5. Apart from trailing Alex de Minaur by a set and break in the quarterfinals, Jannik Sinner has been pretty comfortable all week as he won his other three matches in straight sets against Marton Fucsovics, Marc Andrea Huesler, and Adrian Mannarino.

With the win against Adrian Mannarino, the Italian teenager ended his two-match losing run in the semifinal of ATP Tour events and reached the finals for the very first time in his career. He previously made it to this stage of the Next Gen Finals last year and delivered a dominant straight-set win over Alex de Minaur to lift the biggest title of his career. The 19-year-old Jannik Sinner is the first player born in 2001 to reach the finals of the ATP Tour event, and he will now look to become the youngest champion at this level since Kei Nishikori in Delray Beach 2008, where he defeated James Blake in three sets in the championship match.

“It is nice to be in the final, playing one more match which, for me, is the most important. Today I felt quite well on the court and it is good for me to play my first final this year. I am looking forward to tomorrow,” said Jannik Sinner after the semifinal.

Vasek Pospisil wasted a handful of chances and ended up losing the first set in the tiebreaker, but he remained calm and composed to fight back and secure the match in three sets against Richard Gasquet on Friday, 6-7 6-2 6-0. Every single win in Sofia this week would probably feel like a bonus for the Canadian, considering he was on the verge of losing to the lucky loser Illya Marchenko in the first round on Monday. The Ukrainian served for the match in the deciding set, then gained three consecutive breakpoint chances and later led 4-0 in the deciding set tiebreaker but still ended up on the losing side.

Former world #25 Vasek Pospisil has played two championship matches on the main tour so far in his career and lost both of those matches against compatriot Milos Raonic in Washington (OH) 2014 and Gael Monfils in Montpellier (IH) 2020. Notably, both of those matches concluded in straight sets. The ATP Tour has already seen five first-time titlists so far in 2020 — Ugo Humbert, Casper Ruud, Thiago Seyboth Wild, Miomir Kecmanovic, and John Millman — and one of these two players will take the count to six at the end of Saturday’s play.
