World no. 236 Jana Fett returns to a WTA main draw for the first time since September 2019. She knocked out a couple of much higher-ranked opponents in second seed Irina Bara, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and tenth seed Mayo Hibi, 6-2, 6-3, over the weekend. These were her first victories of the season at a tournament above W25 level. Just three years ago, Fett became a two-time WTA semifinalist at Hobart and Tokyo, and went on to debut in the top 100. It was also in 2017 when she made her only previous appearance in Linz, winning four matches in a row to reach the second round as a qualifier and managing to take a set off eventual champion Strycova.

Tereza Martincova also took the qualifying route and confirmed her main draw debut at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz. The Czech, whose previous such attempts at this tournament in 2017 and 2019 were unsuccessful, battled Jodie Burrage and former world no. 12 Sabine Lisicki in three-setters to make the third time the charm. While Fett has only been seen in the lower rugs of the ITF circuit this year, Martincova has continued to make her presence on the tour. This September, she dismissed former world no. 4 Garcia to reach the semifinal of Istanbul as a qualifier. It was her career’s fourth-ever quarterfinal-or-better WTA result and the first since 2017.
