Genk vs Salzburg – Prediction (Champions League – 27.11.2019)

This is the second European meeting between KRC Genk and FC Red Bull Salzburg – the other was on MD1 of this season’s UEFA Champions League, a 6-2 win for Salzburg.

Winless in their last five games (D2, L3), and with just one point in UEFA Champions League (UCL) Group E, Genk are on the cusp of elimination. They’re clear outsiders here having conceded at least twice in three of their four UCL games – and letting in six versus RB Salzburg in the reverse. The hosts have also shipped at least two goals in three of their last four competitive home games (W1, D1, L2), conceding the opener by the tenth minute and trailing 1-0 at half-time in all three. Whilst Genk will hope to avoid another hammering, the fact four of their last five UCL losses arrived by at least a three-goal margin will be worrying.

Salzburg have seen both teams score in all four of their UCL games, and three feature at least five match goals. A strong away side, the visitors have lost just one of their last 14 competitive away fixtures – and that was to Liverpool, despite scoring three goals. Considering that the Austrian champions have netted the opener in their previous six games (W4, D2) – by the 15th minute in the last three – expect a confident start. Travelling fans will want goals from the get-go, and have seen Salzburg win their last five competitive away victories (90 minutes only) by at least a three-goal margin.

Players to watch: Genk’s Mbwana Samata netted in the reverse – both his UCL goals arrived in the ten minutes either side of half-time. Salzburg’s Hee-Chan Hwang’s two UCL goals were scored in the ten minutes before half-time – all six competitive matches he’s netted in this season involved at least five goals.

Stat attack: Genk’s last four home defeats arrived by at least a two-goal margin. The opener has been scored by the 10th minute in Genk’s last four home games. Salzburg have been involved in just one goalless draw across their previous 66 fixtures.
