Fernando Verdasco defeated the fellow struggler James Duckworth in straight sets to set up a rematch with John Millman in the second round of ATP Nur Sultan on Wednesday. The pair met in the first round of the second leg of ATP Cologne last week when John Millman raced to a comfortable straight-set win. The win against James Duckworth on Monday was only the veteran Spaniard’s second win since the restart. He has gone 2/3 on the main tour in these three months, and notably, all those five matches have concluded in straight sets.

Former world #7 Fernando Verdasco made an encouraging start to the 2020 season by reaching the quarterfinals in Doha and winning two matches in the Australian Open, but he hasn’t been performing at the same level since the tour resumption. The Spaniard even got bageled by the struggling Damir Dzumhur in the qualifying stages of Rome Masters last month, 0-6 2-6.

John Millman’s form since the tour restart hasn’t been great either as he has won only four main draw matches in seven tournaments on the main tour, and in fact, he was winless in three matches before he entered the second leg of ATP Cologne last week, where he defeated Fernando Verdasco in the first round before taking a set off the eventual champion Alexander Zverev in the second.
