Former world #1 Andy Murray and #7 Fernando Verdasco have faced each other 17 times in the last 16 years, but this will be their first meeting since ATP Shenzhen 2018 when the Spaniard took advantage of the Brit’s fitness issues and lack of match time to register a straight-set win, 6-4 6-4. Though Fernando Verdasco has enjoyed very minimal success in this matchup (4-13), he managed to beat Andy Murray in their recent two meetings in the US Open and Shenzhen 2018. Andy Murray took a couple of main draw wildcards in the US Open and French Open since the restart and failed to make an impact, winning one match from the possible three. He even received some criticism for entering the tournaments with wildcard and denying opportunities for youngsters. The 33-year-old Brit would be hoping to answer his critics by posting a good result in ATP Cologne this week. Fernando Verdasco’s form isn’t any better as he played only one match since the tour resumption and suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the struggling Damir Dzumhur, 0-6 2-6 in Rome Masters. The left-handed Spaniard is currently on a four-match losing streak on the main tour and hasn’t played a match on indoor hardcourts since losing to Alexander Zverev in the second round of Paris Masters last year.
