Eighth seed Alex de Minaur recovered from a set and break deficit to defeat Richard Gasquet for the second time in two days in the first round of ATP Antwerp on Tuesday. Earlier this week, the Aussie got the better of the Frenchman in the finals of the third leg of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown. Surprisingly, this is the Australian #1 Alex de Minaur’s first main draw win in ATP Tour events this year. He made a terrific start to the season by impressing in the inaugural edition of the ATP Cup, but the (abdominal) injury that he suffered in January impacted his performance in the following months.

That said, Alex de Minaur raised his level and posted his career-best slam result at the US Open last month, where he defeated the likes of Richard Gasquet and Karen Khachanov to reach the quarterfinal. Alex de Minaur has delivered exceptional results on indoor hardcourts since breaking through on the main tour in 2018 as he twice finished as the runner-up in Next Gen Finals (in 2018 and 2019), reached the finals in Basel and round of 16 in Paris Masters last year.

The 39-year-old Feliciano Lopez snapped his three-match losing streak and returned to the winning ways by delivering a dominant straight-set win over Tommy Paul earlier this week, 6-3 6-2. The veteran Spaniard’s previous two ATP Antwerp campaigns in 2018 and 2019 ended in the second round against Jan Lennard Struff and Stan Wawrinka, respectively, and he would be hoping to avoid a similar fate in this edition. Feliciano Lopez seems to be in the twilight of his career and is nowhere near his best in recent years. However, he’s still finding ways to post some notable results on the main tour, such as winning the title in London last year and reaching the quarterfinal in Auckland this January and Kitzbuhel last month.
