Dominic Thiem vs. Fernando Verdasco – Prediction (24.10.2019)

Preview and players comparison.

Fernando Verdasco hasn’t won back-to-back matches in ATP Tour events since Eastbourne, and he will have to raise his level to have any chance against the home-crowd favorite and in-form Dominic Thiem. That said, the Spaniard holds a dominant 4-0 lead in the H2H series and will be quite confident heading into this clash.

Dominic Thiem was handed a tough test in the first round of ATP Vienna, and he cleared it quite comfortably by defeating the former champion Jo Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets. Thiem created six break point chances on the Frenchman’s serve and held all his service games with relative ease, 6-4 7-6. It was only the Austrian’s first outing on indoor hardcourt (on the main tour) this season. The win against Jo Wilfried Tsonga is a confidence booster for Dominic Thiem, considering the Frenchman has been one of the top performers on the surface over the years as well as in 2019. In his previous nine appearances in Vienna (home event), Dominic Thiem has played six second-round matches and ended up losing four of them. However, he managed to win his recent such match against Sam Querrey in 2018. World #5 Dominic Thiem has reached at least the quarterfinal in all his previous five ATP Tour events, which earned him a couple of titles in Kitzbuhel and Beijing a few weeks ago. This impressive run also secured him a place in the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals.

Fernando Verdasco snapped his three-match losing run on tour with a three-set comeback win over the reigning ATP Hamburg champion Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round of ATP Vienna, 4-6 6-2 6-1. The veteran Spaniard reached the quarterfinal of ATP Vienna during his debut campaign back in 2008 and made to the semifinal during his second visit in 2018 — defeated Guillermo Canas and Kyle Edmund in the second round, respectively.
