For the first time since the middle of 2019, Dayana Yastremska has lost two opening-round matches in a row. She fell 6-4, 6-3 to world no. 788 Gavrilova, who was making a comeback from a year-long injury break, at Roland-Garros, and followed with an even more disheartening 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 defeat to Brady at Ostrava. Yastremska started this season on a strong note and with her maiden Premier-level final appearance at Adelaide. After attaining a career-best ranking of no. 21, the 20-year-old has quietly faded off and her best result in the last nine tournaments has been a quarterfinal at Palermo, the very first tournament of the resumption.

Greet Minnen returns to Europe after playing three USTA Pro Series events across hard and clay courts. While her outings in Macon and Charleston ended in the first rounds, the Belgian managed to reach the semifinal of W80 Tyler, beating Renata Zarazua and Katerzyna Kawa en route, and exited to eventual champion Li. Prior to Tyler, Minnen had managed to amass just two wins in her last ten tournaments. She takes on Yastremska having not beaten a top 100 player since the second round in Melbourne (d. Sasnovich). The 23-year-old herself has been knocking at the door of her top 100 debut for over a year but unable to cover the last stretch.
