While Marin Cilic exited the top 20 group as a result of a poor run in recent months, David Goffin fought his way back into the group after posting some fine results in the second half, which gives him the slight edge in this clash. That said, their H2H is tied at 3-3, and both players would probably see this as a winnable match.

David Goffin had a disappointing campaign in front of the home fans in Antwerp last week. Entering the main draw as the second seed, he could win only four games against the relatively inexperienced Ugo Humbert in the second round (R1 bye), 3-6 1-6. It was the top-ranked Belgian’s fourth opening-round defeat in five indoor hardcourt tournaments this year. He previously failed to win a match in Metz (last month), Rotterdam, and Montpellier. David Goffin, who has delivered improved performances in the second half of 2019 and climbed to #13 in the latest rankings, is defending the semifinal points in Basel this week. He is 4-0 in the first round of ATP Basel and has reached at least the quarterfinal in three of his previous four campaigns in Basel.

Marin Cilic ended his poor run of form and made his first semifinal appearance on the main tour this year in Moscow last week, defeating Ivo Karlovic and Chardy. The Croatian is a two-time former champion of ATP Moscow, but couldn’t reach the final of this edition. Former world #3 Marin Cilic is a former champion of ATP Basel and has posted quarterfinal (or better) results on three other occasions as well. His most recent campaign here in 2018 ended at the hands of the eventual runner-up Marius Copil in the second round.
