The last and only time Daniil Medvedev attempted to defend a title on the main tour was in Cincinnati Masters a couple of months ago, where he failed in the quarterfinal against Roberto Bautista Agut, despite dominating the majority of the contest. Daniil Medvedev has got a terrific record on indoor hardcourts, having won an impressive 99 matches at the expense of only 49 defeats so far in his career. Moreover, he has won at least ten matches on the surface in each of the last five seasons. However, the top-ranked Russian hasn’t performed well on indoor hardcourt this year as he lost two of his three matches and was even bageled by Gilles Simon in his recent such match in Marseille earlier this year.

Richard Gasquet returns to ATP St.Petersburg for the first time in 11 years to make his second appearance in this tournament. Making his debut here way back in 2009, he failed against the Russian Marat Safin in straight sets in the first round. Former world #7 Richard Gasquet, who has been struggling for form and fitness over the last few years, has made two quarterfinal appearances on the main tour so far in 2020, and one of those runs came on the indoor hardcourts in Montpellier.
