CSKA Moscow vs. Ferencvaros – Prediction (24.10.2019)

Preview and Teams Comparison.

The only previous meetings between CSKA Moscow and Ferencvarosi came in the 1994-95 Cup Winners Cup first round. Both sides won 2-1 at home, before the Hungarians progressed on penalties. Both teams have scored in four of CSKA’s previous five UEL games. Four of CSKA’s last six competitive victories arrived by at least a two-goal margin. Only one of Ferencváros’ last nine UEL away games have produced over 2.5 goals (W1, D4, L4). This will be the first meeting between Russian and Hungarian teams in the UEFA Cup/Europa League since the 1997-98 campaign, when Alania Vladikavkaz and MTK Budapest faced each other in the first round of the competition.

With two defeats from two, and the joint-worst goal difference (-6) across the Europa League (UEL) group stage, it looks like make or break time for CSKA Moscow. However the fact they’ve conceded at least two goals in their last three competitive home games doesn’t bode well (W1, L2). CSKA’s leading league scorer with five goals, Nikola Vlašić, has been his side’s final goalscorer in the last three games he’s found the net. If they are to win, it’s likely to be accompanied by a strong defensive performance as six of CSKA’s previous eight competitive home victories have come ‘to nil’. That’s also been the case in three of their last four UEL wins, with all three coming via a 1-0 scoreline.

Ferencváros aren’t faring much better than their hosts with just one point so far, with both their UEL games featuring goals in both halves. Curiously, the 30-time Hungarian champions actually have a better away record in European group stage away games than at home, going unbeaten in three of their six such road trips (W2, D1, L3). Ferencváros’ Tokmac Nguen has scored six competitive goals this season – three were scored in the 60th minute or beyond. Furthermore, they travel here unbeaten in their last five competitive away games (W3, D2), and with at least one goal before half-time in four of those five games (HT: W3, D1, L1), Ferencváros could help foster some early action here.
