Barbora Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, made it to the second week of a major in singles for the first time at Roland-Garros. She defeated this year’s US Open quarterfinalist Tsvetana Pironkova and compatriot Barbora Strycova in three sets, and came as close as a set within the quarterfinals (l. Podoroska). Krejcikova, who hadn’t cleared the first round of a slam until this January, was considering becoming a doubles specialist. The Paris result has given the 24-year-old a renewed hope and a top 100 debut. She carried her form in the qualifyings of Ostrava this weekend and defeated Kaja Juvan, 6-2, 6-0, and Jil Teichmann, 6-3, 6-2.

Another Czech, Tereza Martincova also had a welcome clay season. While competing as a qualifier at Istanbul, she beat Caroline Garcia and Aliaksandra Sasnovich to reach her third WTA semifinal after 2016 Quebec City and 2017 Gstaad. The win over the Frenchwoman was her fourth-ever top 50 win and first since January 2019. Along with Krejcikova, Martincova has confirmed her place in the main draw through the qualifying. She needed two hours and 47 minutes to beat sixth seed Pera, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, but just 76 minutes to see off seventh seed Badosa, 6-3, 6-2. She has now earned eight top 100 wins in 2020, equal to the previous two seasons combined.
