Alexandrova, in particular, has claimed three 125k titles at Limoges (2016, 2018-19), posted a final at Linz in 2018, and enjoyed three other quarterfinal-or-better WTA results across 2019-20 in these conditions. However, it is Kontaveit who is the favorite in their maiden meeting.

Anett Kontaveit’s strong post-break form has withered away in the last two tournaments. Following a runner-up finish in Palermo, quarterfinal at W&S Open, and fourth round at the US Open, the world no. 22 suffered a second-round loss at Rome to Kuznetsova and a first-round exit at Roland-Garros to Garcia, both in three sets. The latter was Kontaveit’s second-only defeat of the season in an opening hurdle (8-2), with the other one coming against Pavlyuchenkova at Adelaide in January. Overall, it has been a successful year for the Estonian, who has secured 23 match wins at all levels and registered her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal in Melbourne.

While Kontaveit left Paris early after falling to Garcia from a winning position, Ekaterina Alexandrova picked up a couple of wins in the French capital. She beat a couple of outside top 100 players in Maddison Inglis and lucky loser Astra Sharma to reach the third round and equal her best major result (2019 Paris, 2020 Melbourne). Though she exited the last-32 of Roland-Garros to Svitolina — her fourth consecutive loss to a top 100 player — it was the first time Alexandrova recorded back-to-back wins in eight tournaments. In comparison, the Russian started the year by winning 11 out of her first 13 matches, including her career’s first WTA title in Shenzhen.
