Then ranked in the 88th spot, Sasnovich upset world no. 16 Sevastova, 7-6, 6-3, to enter her lone Premier-level final and debut into the top 50; she dropped out of the group last month. There is little that separates the two in their second encounter.

Anastasija Sevastova extends her decline as she pulls up to Moscow following first-round exits at Wuhan (McHale) and Beijing (Svitolina) from set leads. The Latvian, who was just a few points away from her top 10 debut over the summer, is now unlikely to make her third consecutive WTA Elite Trophy appearance. Sevastova has played the last four editions of the Kremlin Cup. In 2018, she enjoyed her best result, registering three-set wins over Putintseva, Zvonareva, and Rybarikova to enter the semifinal. The 29-year-old returns with a poor 9-12 season win-loss in hard-court events, with the lone quarterfinal coming in January.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich will end her catastrophic season with a sixth consecutive appearance in Moscow. After failing to get past the first round in the first three attempts, the Belarusian has posted quarterfinal finishes in 2017 and 2018. Last year, she registered one of her career’s five top 10 wins against Kiki Bertens. Sasnovich has gone 17-21 this season, with nine wins coming in January alone. She has lost 10 of her last 13 first-round matches, a stretch which goes back to May, including drawing a blank at three Chinese events last month. The 25-year-old bids her first top 50 win since beating 15th-ranked Kontaveit at Madrid.
