It was the Slovenian’s third win of the campaign as he bagged a couple of straight-set wins over Federico Delbonis and Jozef Kovalik in the qualifying stages. World #72 Aljaz Bedene is a former quarterfinalist of ATP Vienna and has got a 1-1 record in the second round of this tournament — defeated Donald Young in 2012 and lost to Tommy Haas in 2011. Prior to entering Vienna, Aljaz Bedene competed in three indoor hardcourt events (at all levels) this year, and he managed to reach at least the quarterfinal in two of them — runner-up in Metz and quarterfinalist in Orleans Challenger.

Gilles Simon made the most of Feliciano Lopez’s poor form to reach the second round of ATP Vienna for the third consecutive season. He failed at this stage of ATP Vienna in 2016 and 2017 and would be hoping to progress at least one step further this time around. Former world #7 Gilles Simon, who has been struggling to deliver his best performance since suffering an injury in Monte Carlo Masters, registered back-to-back wins on the main tour for the first time in nearly three months by defeating Steve Darcis and Jo Wilfried Tsonga en route to the quarterfinal of ATP Antwerp last week.
