Alexander Zverev maintained his record of winning at least one title every season since 2016 by emerging victorious in the inaugural edition of ATP Cologne last week, where he dropped only one set in four matches. World #7 Alexander Zverev previously went close to winning his first title of the season at the US Open last month as he led Dominic Thiem by two sets to love in the championship match but ended up on the losing side in five sets.

In fact, it was only at ATP Cologne the German managed to score consecutive main draw wins in ATP Tour events for the time this season. He lost all his three matches in the ATP Cup, could win only one match in Acapulco, and suffered an opening-round exit from Cincinnati Masters. Despite underperforming in ATP Tour events in these ten months, the German was high on confidence (before entering ATP Cologne last week) as he has delivered impressive results in slams such as reaching the semifinals in the Australian Open, round of 16 in the French Open and finals in the US Open.

John Millman snapped his three-match losing streak and registered only his fourth win on the main tour since the tour resumption by defeating fellow struggling Fernando Verdasco in the first round of ATP Cologne, 6-4 6-2. It was the 31-year-old Aussie’s first win in an indoor hardcourt ATP Tour event since defeating compatriot Alexei Popyrin in the first round of ATP Stockholm 2018, where he lost out to the eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.
