Alexander Zverev is seeded #1 and given a bye in the first round as he kickstarts his ATP Cologne campaign on Thursday. The German has gone 1-5 in ATP Tour events this year (including the ATP Cup), with that sole win coming against Jason Jung in the first round of ATP Acapulco. Despite a poor showing in ATP Tour events, world #7 Alexander Zverev would probably be satisfied with his performance this year as he enjoyed his time in slams, having reached the semifinal in the Australian Open, finished as the runner-up in the US Open and round of 16 in the French Open. This will be the top-ranked German’s first outing on indoor hardcourt since reaching the semifinal at the ATP World Tour Finals last November. He played nine matches on the surface last year and could win only four of them.

Fernando Verdasco scored his third consecutive win over Andy Murray to reach the second round of the inaugural edition of ATP Cologne. The Brit is nowhere near his best at the moment and struggled quite badly, gifting the Spaniard a comfortable win, 6-4 6-4. With this win, the veteran Spaniard snapped his four-match losing streak on the main tour. Prior to entering ATP Cologne, Fernando Verdasco had played only one match since the tour resumption and suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the struggling Damir Dzumhur in Rome Masters, 0-6 2-6. Former world #7 Fernando Verdasco’s only previous first-round win in ATP Tour events this year came in Doha in January, where he defeated Pablo Andujar and Filip Krajinovic to reach the quarterfinal.
