Alex de Minaur kickstarted his Paris Masters campaign with a comfortable straight-set win over Stefano Travaglia. The Italian dealt with some fitness issues in recent weeks and couldn’t offer much of a challenge to the Aussie, who won 6-4 6-4. The top-ranked Aussie made his mark in ATP Tour events this season and posted his best result of the season on the main tour by progressing to the finals in Antwerp a couple of weeks ago, where he defeated the likes of Grigor Dimitrov and Richard Gasquet before losing to Ugo Humbert in the championship match. After failing in the first round of his debut Paris Masters campaign in 2018, Alex de Minaur did well to reach the round of 16 here in 2019, defeating Laslo Djere and Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets.

Lorenzo Sonego entered Paris Masters with a lot of confidence, and it reflected in his performance as the Italian dropped only five games against the big-serving Alexander Bublik in the first round, 6-1 6-4. World #32 Lorenzo Sonego had been struggling to win matches in ATP Tour events since the restart and failed in the qualifying stages of ATP Vienna last week. However, he entered the main draw as a lucky loser and impressed by defeating the likes of world #1 Novak Djokovic and Brit #1 Dan Evans before losing to the in-form Andrey Rublev in the finals.
