Alex de Minaur vs. Grigor Dimitrov – Prediction – ATP Antwerp (Belgium) – 24.10.2020

H2H: Alex de Minaur vs Grigor Dimitrov – comparison.

Grigor Dimitrov raced to a straight-set win when the pair met in the round of 16 in the US Open last year, but expect this to be a close contest with both players having equal chances.

Milos Raonic pulled out of the quarterfinal clash with an injury, handing Grigor Dimitrov a freepass into the semifinal of ATP Antwerp. The Bulgarian previously received a walkover win from the big-serving Canadian in the semifinal of ATP Beijing in 2016, where Grigor Dimitrov finished as the runner-up to Andy Murray. Earlier this week, former world #3 Grigor Dimitrov made a shaky start to his campaign as he was taken to the distance by the clay-court specialist Pablo Andujar in the second round (R1 bye), 4-6 6-3 6-4.

The 29-year-old Grigor Dimitrov had a couple of disappointing outings after the restart — R2 exit in Cincinnati Masters and the US Open — but has done well in recent weeks by progressing to the quarterfinal in Rome Masters and round of 16 in the French Open, winning three matches in each of those tournaments. Since finishing as the runner-up to Roger Federer in Rotterdam (IH) in 2018, Grigor Dimitrov has played four semifinal matches on the main tour and failed to win any of them, with the recent such defeat coming at the hands of the eventual champion Rafael Nadal in Acapulco earlier this year.

Alex de Minaur’s road to the semifinal of ATP Antwerp was quite comfortable as after defeating the struggling Richard Gasquet and Feliciano Lopez, he delivered a dominant straight-set win over the first-time quarterfinalist Marcos Giron (6-3 6-0) on Friday. This run could probably give Alex de Minaur the much-needed confidence and help him get his season back on track. He made a terrific start to 2020 by producing some superb performances in the ATP Cup but struggled with injuries and failed to perform at his best level in the following months. In fact, he had gone 0-4 in ATP Tour events this year before entering Antwerp this week. The Aussie #1 Alex de Minaur is currently on a six-match winning streak in the semifinal on the main tour (including ATP Next Gen Finals) and has got a terrific 8-2 record at this stage, with the last such defeat coming against Pierre Hugues Herbert in Shenzhen 2018.
