Marin Cilic had to work hard for the win in the first round earlier this week as the American lucky loser Marcos Giron won the second set and created seven break point chances in the deciding set, 6-2 4-6 6-3. The big-serving Croatian’s only previous outing on indoor hardcourt this year came in Marseille in February, where he scored a tough three-set win over Ilya Ivashka in the first round but couldn’t get past Denis Shapovalov in the second. Former world #3 Marin Cilic is struggling for form and confidence in recent years, and as a result, he’s dropped to #40 in the latest ATP Tour rankings. In fact, he hasn’t even made a quarterfinal appearance at this level since ATP Moscow 2019.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina scored a superb straight-set win over the in-form and dangerous Emil Ruusuvuori to move into the second round of the inaugural edition of ATP Cologne. It was an evenly contested match, and the Spaniard was more efficient on breakpoints, 7-5 6-4. This was the former Boys’ Wimbledon Champion, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s first win on indoor hardcourt since defeating Gregoire Jacq in an ITF event in 2018. He has played only 14 matches on the surface so far in his career and lost nine of them. Apart from posting his career-best slam result in the US Open (R16) last month, the talented Spaniard hasn’t done much so far in 2020. He enjoyed his breakthrough season on the main tour last year but is yet to win consecutive main draw matches in ATP Tour events this year.
