Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Dominic Thiem – Prediction (ATP London Final – 17.11.2019)

Tsitsipas (Gre) vs. Thiem (Aut). Preview and players comparison.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem are the only players to have registered at least one win against each of the Big Three players so far in 2019, and they will face each other in the title-deciding clash of ATP World Tour Finals. One of these two players will lift the biggest title of their career at the end of Sunday’s play. The championship match in London will be a rematch of the ATP Beijing finals a couple of months ago when Stefanos Tsitsipas raced to a set and break lead but couldn’t maintain the level and ended up losing in three sets, 6-3 4-6 1-6.

Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated six-time ATP World Tour Finals champion Roger Federer for the second time this season to secure his berth in Sunday’s final. It was a hugely impressive performance from the Greek youngster, especially considering he played out a grueling three-setter against Rafael Nadal on Friday while Roger Federer had an additional day of rest. The champion of ATP Next Gen Finals 2018, Stefanos Tsitsipas has now become only the third player to reach the finals of year-end championships on debut appearance. Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin made it to this stage of ATP World Tour Finals during their debut campaign in 2017, and the Bulgarian ended up winning the biggest title of his career (defeated Goffin 7-5 4-6 6-3).

“Dominic has always been someone that I looked up to and wanted always to play with the same intensity and the same will that he puts in the court. He puts in a lot of effort and… I would just describe him as an intense player. If he’s in the zone, he can just create so many opportunities with his game,” Stefanos Tsitsipas talking about his Sunday’s opponent.

Dominic Thiem continued his recent good form with a comfortable straight-set win over the defending champion Alexander Zverev in the semifinal, 7-5 6-3. Thiem couldn’t progress beyond the group stage of ATP World Tour Finals during his previous three appearances, but he is now a win away from becoming the first-ever Austrian to win the season finale.Like his Sunday’s opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas, Dominic Thiem has won all his meaningful matches so far in this campaign and lost the dead-rubber against Matteo Berrettini in straight sets. He has gone 10/3 on indoor hardcourt so far in 2019, and one more win on the surface would make this his career-best season on indoor hardcourt. Very rarely a player ends up without a title after overcoming Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the same tournament. In fact, the most recent champion of ATP World Tour Finals, Alexander Zverev, defeated the Swiss and Serbian in the semifinal and final, respectively.

While Stefanos Tsitsipas is the better player in these conditions, Dominic Thiem has outperformed the Greek so far in the second half of 2019, and he’s also got the better conversion rate at this stage of tour events (16/8 vs 3/5 in the championship matches), which makes it difficult to pick a winner here.
