Overview.
A win in Hungary last game pushed Slovakia back up into second in the Group E standings and marked their fourth straight international match to see the victor on the day triumph combined with over 2.5 match goals. All five of their Euro 2020 qualifiers (ECQ) have also seen the team that scored first, go on to win – a scenario now seen in their last 14 ECQs to produce a winner. Their 4-0 home loss to Croatia in qualifying means that nine of their last 13 international games played on home soil have seen just one side score, with Slovakia more often than not coming out on top.
After losing both away ECQs so far, Wales enter this game needing to at least avoid defeat to have any real chance of qualifying. A 1-0 home win over Slovakia should give them confidence, but does highlight their goalscoring struggles that have seen them fail to net more than once in ten of their last 11 international matches. Games are tight nonetheless, with each of the last nine in that sequence seeing a one-goal margin of victory either way. Six of those nine ended 1-0. Indeed perhaps highlighting a theme here, seventeen of Wales’ last 23 ECQS have seen just one side, or no side score.
