H2H: Rafael Nadal v Stefanos Tsitsipas – comparison.

Former world #1 Rafael Nadal is a win away from making his first semifinal appearance in the ATP Tour Finals since 2015. His recent two campaigns here in 2017 and 2019 ended in the group stages as he pulled out of the 2017 edition after losing his opening match and couldn’t progress to the next stage of the 2019 edition despite winning two round-robin matches. Rafael Nadal got edged out by Dominic Thiem in a high-quality two-set encounter on Tuesday. The Spaniard played well for the majority of the match but uncharacteristically committed some unforced errors in crunch situations, which proved costly in the end, 7-6 7-6. The last time Rafael Nadal lost a match in the group stages but still made it to the semifinals of the ATP Tour Finals was way back in 2007 when he failed against compatriot David Ferrer in the second match but got the job done against Novak Djokovic in his final round-robin match.

“I know it will require a lot of physical effort, and I’m going to have to go through a lot of pain and suffering, so it is going to be a difficult match. Yeah, I’m expecting a fight from my side,” said Stefanos Tsitsipas ahead of this highly-anticipated clash.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was on the verge of exiting the group stage of the ATP Tour Finals as his opponent Andrey Rublev made a stunning comeback and held a match point in the deciding set tiebreaker. However, the Greek saved it and just managed to scrape his way past the in-form Russian, 6-1 4-6 7-6. World #6 Stefanos Tsitsipas won the biggest title of his career here in London during his debut campaign in 2019, defeating Roger Federer, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Dominic Thiem.

“He [Dominic Thiem] created damage on me with his general game, and I created damage on his as well. He wasn’t the better player, and I wasn’t the better player. He deserves the victory because he played the big points very well,” said Rafael Nadal after producing a solid performance.

Stefanos Tsitsipas lost only one match in the ATP Tour Finals last year, which came against Rafael Nadal in his final round-robin match. A similar result against the Spaniard this Thursday would make him the first defending champion to exit the group stage of this tournament since Novak Djokovic in 2008-09. Stefanos Tsitsipas has done exceptionally well against Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in recent years but seems to struggle against Rafael Nadal, having lost six of the pair’s seven meetings. Regardless of the lop-sided H2H, the Greek is very much capable of beating the Spaniard in these conditions and expect him to have a fair chance in this battle for a place in the semifinal in London.
