Novak Djokovic was outfoxed and outclassed by Daniil Medvedev in his second round-robin match on Wednesday. The Serbian could win only 59% of his first-serve points and exposed eight breakpoint chances on his serve, 3-6 3-6. The five-time former champion of the ATP Tour Finals, Novak Djokovic is at the risk of suffering consecutive group-stage exit from this tournament for the first time in his career in 13 appearances.

Last year as well, the Serbian began his ATP Tour Finals campaign with a dominant win over a debutant (Matteo Berrettini) but lost his following two matches against Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer and eventually failed to qualify for the semifinal of this tournament for the first time since 2011. Failing to reach the semifinals in London this week would be yet another disappointment for Novak Djokovic in this mixed 2020 season. He has won four titles on the main tour so far this year and went through a 37-match winning streak (in completed matches) in tour-level events but failed to achieve his main targets, such as winning the 18th slam and finishing the season with zero losses.

“He [Daniil Medvedev] was just better, no question about it… He’s serving tremendously well, moving great. [He didn’t] give me too many unforced errors and free points. Yeah, I mean, just not a great match from my side. I thought I could have and should have done better, but credit to him for playing on a high level,” said Novak Djokovic.

Alexander Zverev threw away a set and a break lead at one stage and later needed three sets and over two hours against the ATP Tour Finals debutant Diego Schwartzman to register his first win of the campaign, 6-3 4-6 6-3. The top-ranked German is a win away from making his third consecutive semifinal appearance in the year-end championships. His debut campaign here in 2017 ended in the group stages but won the biggest title of his career in London in 2018 and reached the semifinals last year.

While Novak Djokovic has had some disappointing moments on tour since the restart, Alexander Zverev enjoyed his time in these four months as he finished as the runner-up to Dominic Thiem in the US Open (career-best result in slams) and bagged consecutive titles in the first and second leg of ATP Cologne and finished as the runner-up to Daniil Medvedev in Paris Masters a couple of weeks ago. The Serbian edges the H2H series 4-3 (at all levels), including winning their recent two meetings in the French Open 2019 and Adria Tour during this tour suspension. Novak Djokovic’s ability to deliver goods in big matches makes him the deserved favorite, but his recent shaky form should give Alexander Zverev a lot of encouragement heading into this must-win encounter.
