Preview and players comparison.
Pliskova seeks her biggest indoor win in terms of rankings since April 2017. The world no. 70 will start as the clear favorite against Bolsova in their first meeting. At the same time, the Spaniard bids her second top 100 win on hard-courts, with the first one being a three-setter against Czech Strycova at Flushing Meadows.
Kristyna Pliskova reached just her second WTA semifinal since May 2017 at Tashkent a few days ago, beating top seed Viktoria Kuzmova en route. It didn’t prevent her from receiving a 3-0, 6-0, 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round of Linz — lost the last two sets in 46 minutes. Pliskova has been successful in easy picking against outside top 100 players this year. 18 of her 21 wins in the main draws have come against such opponents. She embarks on her third campaign at Luxembourg, previously suffering a second-round loss in 2016 (l. Davis) and a first-round in 2018 (l. Suarez Navarro).
Aliona Bolsova has faded away since scripting the surprising run at Roland Garros. The Spaniard, who made her tour-level main draw debut in Charleston in April, knocked out unseeded players in Zvonareva, Cirstea, and Alexandrova in straight sets to reach the fourth round while playing as a qualifier (l. Anisimova). Bolsova holds a 6-10 win-loss since Paris, including just a couple of wins on tour, against Varvara Flink in Bucharest and Barbora Strycova at the US Open. The 21-year-old, who attained a peak ranking of no. 88, choose to skip the entire Asian swing and instead made two unsuccessful clay-court ITF outings in Europe.
