Jurij Rodionov vs. Denis Shapovalov – Prediction – ATP Vienna (Austria) 26.10.2020

H2H: Jurij Rodionov v Denis Shapovalov – comparison.

Jurij Rodionov has already won 11 matches on indoor hard courts this year, including a title in Dallas Challenger, and he has got the game and ability to test Denis Shapovalov to an extent, especially if he serves well and plays with confidence. That said, the Canadian’s experience at this level should help him negotiate the win and make his mark in Vienna.

Denis Shapovalov’s unbeaten run in the opening-round matches since ATP Rotterdam in February came to an end at the hands of Gilles Simon in the second leg of ATP Cologne last week. It was his third opening-round exit in five indoor hard court tournaments this year. The top-ranked Canadian could win only two matches in ATP Tour events before the tour suspension but has done quite well since the restart, having reached the semifinal in Rome Masters (career-best result on clay) and St.Petersburg and quarterfinal in the US Open (career-best result in slams).

Last year as well, the world #10 Denis Shapovalov struggled in the first half of the season but teaming up with Mikhail Youzhny in the second half of the year revived his season as well as the career as he posted some solid results in the closing stages by winning the title in Stockholm (IH) and finishing as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic in Paris Masters (IH). These results eventually helped the Canadian make his top 20 debut. Despite bagging a lot of wins and being in fine form in the second half of 2019, Denis Shapovalov couldn’t win a match in Vienna as his debut campaign here in 2019 ended in the first round against Pablo Carreno Busta.

Jurij Rodionov was previously awarded a qualifying wildcard in Vienna 2018 and recently in Kitzbuhel a couple of months ago, but he’s been granted a wildcard entry into the main draw this week. The Austrian youngster struggled quite badly in exhibition events during the tour suspension and also for a few weeks after the restart. However, he gained a lot of confidence by winning four matches in a row (as a qualifier) in the French Open recently, which could probably revive his season as well as career.
