John Millman vs. Vasek Pospisil – Prediction – ATP Sofia (Bulgaria) 12.11.2020

H2H: John Millman v Vasek Pospisil – comparison.

Vasek Pospisil’s previous two quarterfinal appearances on the main tour this year came before the tour suspension, and he managed to win one against Richard Gasquet in Montpellier (IH) and lost the other against Stefanos Tsitsipas in Marseille. Though John Millman lifted a title in Nur Sultan recently, Vasek Pospisil has performed comparatively better in recent months, and he heads into this clash as the slight favorite.

Sixth seed John Millman just managed to scrape past Gilles Simon in a closely contested second-round match on Wednesday. The Frenchman recovered from a break deficit in the second set and forced a decider in which the Australian got two breaks of serve to secure the win, 7-5 6-7 6-2. This is only the second time the Australian #2 John Millman has managed to clear the second-round hurdle on the main tour since the tour resumption (in ten outings).

However, John Millman would probably still be happy with the result during this period as he lifted the maiden ATP Tour title of his career in the inaugural edition of ATP Nur Sultan a few weeks ago, where he rode his luck on a couple of occasions against Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul. John Millman has gone 1-1 in the quarterfinal of ATP Tour events so far in 2020, having lost to Benoit Paire in Auckland back in January and defeated Tommy Paul in Nur Sultan last month. Notably, both of those matches went the distance.

Vasek Pospisil produced a solid performance to knock out the dangerous Jan Lennard Struff in the second round of ATP Sofia on Tuesday. He created a whopping ten breakpoint chances on the big-serving German’s serve and won an impressive 90% of his first-serve points, 6-3 6-4. It was a relatively more comfortable outing for the Canadian, who survived a huge scare against the lucky loser Illya Marchenko in the first round on Monday. The Ukrainian, playing his first main draw match on the main tour in over two years, served for the match in the deciding set, then gained three consecutive breakpoint chances and later led 4-0 in the deciding set tiebreaker but still ended up on the losing side. This is a much-needed run for the 30-year-old Vasek Pospisil as he was going through a rough patch in recent weeks. After progressing to the round of 16 in the US Open, he dropped a set against Jason Jung and Alexander Erler in Vienna and was beaten in three sets by the struggling Marton Fucsovics in Paris Masters.
