H2H: Hungary vs. Uruguay – Prediction (Friendly

After last playing a South American side in an international friendly back in August 2005 (2-1 loss to Argentina), Hungary entertain Uruguay in their 26th overall H2H versus a CONMEBOL nation (W8, D6, L11), meaning the ‘Mighty Magyars’ are winless in 68% of their 25 previous encounters versus such sides. Mate Patkai has scored two goals in his last four home appearances. Both goals arrived within the final 15 minutes, and in games when Hungary won by a one-goal margin. A 1-0 win over Azerbaijan in mid-October saw Hungary snap a three-game losing streak, but record their fourth shutout in six home internationals. Those home games also form part of a run of 19 games without a draw (W10, L9), while 11 of the last 13 at home saw the winning side triumph by a single-goal margin.

Subsequently, five of their last six internationals have seen under 2.5 goals. Darwin Núñez (URU) has scored three goals in his last five appearances for club and country, all in games that saw both sides score. With just one defeat from four previous H2H encounters (4-2 AET in the 1954 World Cup), Uruguay will hope to record back-to-back wins over Hungary, having beaten them 2-0 in their last H2H in 2000 (W1, D2, L1). What’s more, Uruguay boss Óscar Tabárez has a pretty good record against UEFA nations (W16, D12, L15).
