It was a much-needed result for the top-ranked Brit Dan Evans, who lost all his previous five matches on the main tour and had won only two matches since the tour resumption — R2 in Cincinnati Masters and the US Open.

The American youngster heads into this clash with a 1-1 record in the second round of ATP Antwerp, with the recent such match ending in a straight-set win over Jan Lennard Struff in 2019.
