Dominic Thiem vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas – Prediction – ATP London (UK) 15.11.2020

H2H: Dominic Thiem v Stefanos Tsitsipas – comparison.

Dominic Thiem edges the H2H series 4-3 on the main tour, but the Greek won their recent meeting in the finals here in London last year. Stefanos Tsitsipas’ fitness and performance levels will play a significant role in deciding the outcome of this contest as a fully-fit Greek should have the edge over the Austrian in these conditions.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has comfortably qualified for the ATP Tour Finals for the second consecutive season. With 40 wins from 55 outings (at all levels), and one ATP Tour Title in Marseille (IH), this has been yet another successful season for the Greek. Making his debut in the ATP Tour Finals in 2019, the 22-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas impressed straight away by defeating the likes of Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem en route to lifting the biggest title of his career.

Stefanos Tsitsipas lost his final round-robin match against Rafael Nadal here in London last year, and he wants to go all the way without losing a match this time around. “Why not win it undefeated this year? I don’t feel any pressure, this tournament is different. I want to enjoy every match, every moment. I am among the eight best players of the season, and that brings me joy, not pressure,” said Stefanos Tsitsipas ahead of this campaign.

The fast-rising Greek has finished his previous two seasons by lifting a title on the main tour. During his breakthrough season in 2018, he qualified for the second edition of ATP Next Gen Finals and ended up becoming the undefeated champion, defeating the likes of Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur. Though Stefanos Tsitsipas has enjoyed a lot of success so far in 2020, his form coming into this campaign hasn’t been too great. Since suffering an injury during his tough and grueling five-setter against Novak Djokovic in the French Open, he has played three matches on the main tour and lost two of them. Notably, all those three matches went the distance.

Dominic Thiem makes his fifth consecutive appearance at the ATP Tour Finals this week as he looks to finish his hugely successful 2020 season on a positive note. Impressive results over the last 11 months, coupled with the absence of Roger Federer, helped the Austrian finally break into the top-3 of ATP Tour Rankings and attain his career-high ranking of #3. After four consecutive disappointing campaigns in London between 2016-2019, Dominic Thiem finally managed to get out of the group stages of this tournament for the first time in 2019 and was very close to defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the championship match, 7-6 2-6 6-7.

Dominic Thiem worked really hard during the tour suspension and got the desired result after the tour resumption as he lifted the biggest title of his career in the US Open. However, the Austrian’s performance in these last four months wasn’t entirely convincing as he suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Filip Krajinovic and was troubled by the likes of Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev in the US Open and Hugo Gaston and Diego Schwartzman in the French Open. Dominic Thiem’s only previous appearance on indoor hard courts (on the main tour) this season came in Vienna a few weeks ago, where he dropped 9 games against the ATP Tour main draw debutant Vitaliy Sachko in the first round and later failed in straight sets against Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinal.
