Dominic Thiem vs. Alexander Zverev – Prediction (ATP London – 16.11.2019)

Thiem (Aut) vs. Zverev (Ger). Preview and players comparison.

World #7 Alexander Zverev, under the guidance of Ivan Lendl, won the biggest title of his career in the ATP World Tour Finals in 2018, defeating Roger Federer in the semifinal and Novak Djokovic in the championship match. 2019 is arguably the German’s worst season on the main tour since he made his breakthrough at this level a few years ago but he still managed to win a title, finished as the runner-up in Acapulco and Shanghai Masters, cemented his place inside top 10 and is now in the semifinal of ATP World Tour Finals.Alexander Zverev’s semifinal qualification scenario was pretty straightforward as he needed to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final round-robin match on Friday, and he just managed to do that, 6-4 7-6. The German has played three matches so far in this campaign, and all three matches have concluded in straight-sets.

“The O2 is the most special arena for me. It’s where I play my best tennis. The atmosphere here is something we don’t play in anywhere else in the world. It’s so special to us. I’ve still got to improve. We’re in the semi-finals now, and it doesn’t get any easier from here. I’m going to have to play my best tennis to have a chance,” said a delighted Alexander Zverev after reaching the semifinal.

The year-end championships has proven to be one of the easiest titles to defend in the past as the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Lleyton Hewitt have done it multiple times so far in this decade. Alexander Zverev will look to join this elite list by winning two more matches in London this week.

Dominic Thiem, who secured his qualification for the semifinal after scoring two big wins over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, did the right thing by conserving energy against Matteo Berrettini in a dead-rubber on Thursday. The Austrian did not spend much effort and saved his energy for the semifinal after losing the first set to the Italian, 6-7 3-6. World #5 Dominic Thiem would be delighted with his performance and results so far in this campaign as all his previous three appearances in the ATP World Tour Finals ended in the group stage of 2016, 2017, and 2018 editions. Dominic Thiem richly deserves to be in semifinal in London this week, especially considering his terrific form in recent months. Since the start of the Asian swing, the Austrian has played 18 matches and managed to win 15 of them, which earned him two titles in Vienna (IH) and Beijing and a quarterfinal spot in Shanghai Masters.

Very rarely a player ends up without a title after overcoming Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in back-to-back matches, and it would be interesting to see how far can Thiem go in London this week. Dominic Thiem holds a dominant 5-2 lead in the H2H series, but there isn’t much between these two on indoor hardcourt and expect both of them to have equal chances in this semifinal encounter.
