Dennis Novak vs Guido Pella – Prediction (ATP Cup Australia – 06.01.2020)

Preview and players comparison.

Dennis Novak comfortably bagged the first set and was in control of the proceedings against the former world #3 Marin Cilic. However, the Austrian couldn’t handle the tough conditions as the match progressed and ended up losing the contest in two hours and 28 minutes, 7-6 4-6 4-6. Though Dennis Novak had a solid season in 2019 by bagging 45 wins and two lower-level titles, he is yet to win a match on outdoor hardcourt since defeating Lorenzo Giustino in the US Open 2018. He played only two matches on the surface last year and lost both of those matches.

Some of Dennis Novak’s biggest wins have come while representing his nation in the Davis Cup. He impressed in 2018 by defeating Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur in the Davis Cup singles rubber and also stopped the in-form Christian Garin in the same competition last year.
Guido Pella made a positive contribution to Argentina’s 2-1 win over Poland by negotiating a three-set win over a tricky opponent in Kamil Majchrzak, 6-2 2-6 6-2. Pella fired nine aces, won over 80% of his first-serve points, and created 15 breakpoint chances during this win.

The left-handed Argentinian enjoyed a hugely successful season in 2019 as he ended his four-match losing streak in the championship matches on the main tour and lifted the maiden title of his career in Sao Paulo. Additionally, he posted a handful of quarterfinal (or better) results and went onto attain his career-high ranking of #20. Though Dennis Novak is very much capable of winning this matchup, experience at the top level does give Guido Pella the upper-hand in this evenly-poised battle.
