Daniil Medvedev vs. Diego Schwartzman – Prediction – ATP London (UK) 20.11.2020

H2H: Medvedev v Schwartzman – comparison.

Daniil Medvedev is by far the better player in these conditions, and he also holds a dominant 4-0 lead (8-1) in the H2H series. All things considered, this is the Russian’s match to lose, and his performance and motivation levels will decide the outcome.

Daniil Medvedev followed up his dominant straight-set win over Alexander Zverev with yet another impressive straight-set win over the world #1 Novak Djokovic on Wednesday. The Russian was in control of the match (against Novak Djokovic) right from the start as he created eight breakpoint chances on the Serbian’s serve and exposed only one such chance on his serve, 6-3 6-3. Thanks to these two straightforward wins, the top-ranked Russian is through to the semifinals of the ATP Tour Finals as the group winner. This has been the perfect reaction from Daniil Medvedev, who made his debut here in 2019 and lost all his three round-robin matches.

Daniil Medvedev had played too many tough and grueling matches in the run-up to the ATP Tour Finals last year, which hurt his chances against top players in consecutive matches. Unlike in 2019, the 24-year-old seems to have hit the form right in time for the year-end championships this year as he won the biggest title of his career in Paris Masters earlier this month and is currently on a seven-match winning streak (all on IH). Dominic Thiem was in a similar position on Thursday (group winner and SF berth confirmed), and he did not waste too much energy and eventually went down in straight sets against Andrey Rublev. It will be interesting to see if the Russian decides to conserve energy or goes for additional ranking points and prize money.

“I finished number one in the group already, which is great. Of course, I’m going to try to win my third match,” said Daniil Medvedev.

Diego Schwartzman fought back from a set and a break down and forced a decider but couldn’t steal the win against Alexander Zverev, 6-3 4-6 6-3. Earlier in this campaign, he conceded a straight-set defeat against the world #1 and former champion Novak Djokovic. The Argentinian wasn’t expected to cause much damage in the ATP Tour Finals this week, and that’s exactly what has happened so far. He has played only 39 matches on indoor hard courts in his career and had never played a match in this venue before.

Nevertheless, Diego Schwartzman deserves a lot of credit for maximizing his chances and qualifying for the ATP Tour Finals. The top-ranked Argentinian suffered an injury in the early stages of the 2020 season and struggled to win matches for a few weeks after the tour resumption but managed to raise his level and delivered some exceptional results over the last two months, such as finishing as the runner-up in Rome Masters and Cologne and reaching the semifinal in the French Open and quarterfinal in Paris Masters.
