An impressive five-game unbeaten La Liga (LL) run was cruelly ended as Cádiz suffered a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Atlético Madrid, giving them their third defeat of the LL campaign, all of which saw a 2+ goal margin. Real Sociedad are one of the division’s surprise performers, and the 20 points they’ve gained after nine rounds equals their performance in 1981/82 – the last season that they were crowned champions of Spain. At both ends of the pitch they’ve excelled, with a 17.4% shot conversion rate their best across the last 15 seasons, and contributing to an average of 2.22 goals scored per match – whilst still early days, the last time Sociedad finished a season with a higher average was back in 1950/51. Furthermore, ahead of this gameweek, Sociedad’s average of just 0.44 goals conceded per fixture is the third lowest across Europe’s top five divisions. With a defence like that, it’s little surprise they have won despite a -2 handicap in three of their four LL road trips (D1).
